Flexible Carers' Services

A scheme for Haringey's unpaid carers

Flexible carers' services are a new initiative to support carers. They are a development of the popular Take A Break scheme, which has been replaced with a wider range of support options. Early application is advised.

What are flexible carers' services?

We believe that carers have a good idea of what will support them in their caring role and flexible carers' services focus on carers' needs and what carers say would be most helpful. They cover anything which supports carers to care and live their own life apart from caring. They help carers maintain their own health and well being. A flexible carer's service is a one off payment to a carer for something of practical benefit and is not charged for.

What are some examples?

A flexible carer's service can be anything which the carer identifies - a break (holiday or special event), travel (cab fares to get to work on time, annual travel card, mileage), gardening, equipment (washing machine, mobile phone to keep in touch), vocational course, help in the home, complementary therapies, gym membership and so on...

Who is eligible for a flexible carer's service?

The carer (aged 18 or over) must be providing substantial care on a regular basis to someone aged over 18 who lives in Haringey. Or they must be providing short-term intensive care e.g. to someone with mental ill health. This qualifies the carer for a carer's assessment. A flexible carer's service will be recommended by a care manager, care co-ordinator or approved assessor as an outcome of a carer's assessment.  The service will usually be offered to one carer (only) per household.
