Haringey Carer of the Year
Andreas Petinou, from Sidney Road, Wood Green, looks after his wife who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

Nominating him, his daughter Melissa Adamou said:
“My wonderful father took on his dutiful role as a caring, loving husband. Mum’s illness was difficult for all of us, but dad never left her side.
“I would like to nominate this wonderful man as a fantastic, dutiful carer to his beautiful wife because he deserves to be recognised for the hard working 17 years he has given to looking after her.”
Mr Petinou was presented with a trophy and £100.
And for the first time, a lifetime achievement award was also presented. The award went to Linda Dawson from Holcombe Road in Tottenham.
Linda, who is herself a carer, has started a new carers learning disability group in the borough as well as helping and supporting other carers and people who suffer from disabilities.
Among the citations were:
- “I have lost count of the people with learning disabilities and their families that she has helped.”
- “Linda does not only help carers, she has always given lots of support to anyone with all kinds of disability. Linda deserves recognition.”
And:
- “Linda is always ready to listen and help us with our problems.”
This year there were 23 nominations for 18 carers who look after people in the borough.
It is the third time that Haringey Council has run the award. Previous winners were Luis Camara in 2007 and last year there were joint winners: Sharon Lindsay and Hilda Currey.
There are around 16,000 unpaid carers in Haringey. The Haringey Carer of the Year award is part of the national Carers’ Week.
