Carers

Who are carers?

Carers are adults and children who take care of adults or disabled children and they are unpaid. The caring role can be stressful, and isolating. Carers provide care to people who are ill, frail or living with a disability and who cannot manage without them. Carers look after partners, spouses, family members, friends or neighbours.

The cared-for person must live in Haringey, although carers may live inside or outside the borough.

If you are a carer, you're not alone. According to the 2001 census, there are approximately 16,000 carers in Haringey and there are around 1,200 carers on the Haringey register.

How we help carers

If you are an unpaid carer, you have the right to a carer's assessment. This will give you the opportunity to discuss any help you need with caring and maintaining your own health and well-being.

We aim to support carers in Haringey to care and to live a better life. We do this by working in partnership with the health service to deliver a wide range of services and advice. In the attached file section below you will find a comprehensive list of services available to carers. Services include: advocacy, counselling, information/advice drop-ins, support groups, benefits advice and yoga.

Use the navigation links on the left of this page to find out how carers can get an assessment of their needs and extra support with their caring responsibilities.

Also, Haringey Council's new Carers Hub at Wood Green Central Library is now open:

  • to give carers a relaxing space where they can meet other unpaid carers over a cup of tea /coffee or to access the internet
  • to provide somewhere where carers can access information and advice.

Key priorities for carers

In August 2010, the Carers Partnership Board (CPB) held an away day to identify the Board’s priorities over the next one to two years. The CPB identified the following priorities, which are also priorities identified by carers through the consultation in 2008-09 on the Haringey Adult Carers Strategy.

Carers Partnership Board priorities:

  • Carers assessments – a holistic and consistent approach;
  • Respite care (planned and emergency) – accessible and appropriate respite options;
  • Carer awareness and community services – within community services (health and voluntary sector) raising awareness of carers, their needs and support and services available to carers; and
  • Publicity and engagement - of services and support available to carers.

We have been working intensively with carers to develop Carers Emergency Plans. These have been completed through Carers Assessment or Review. Carers who join the Carers Register are also sent a copy of the Carers Emergency Plan application form to complete. For older parent carers, the importance of having an emergency plan in place is recognised and is a key priority for the Learning Disabilities service. Work is well underway in the service to work with older carers to plan for the future care and support needs of the person they are looking after, and many plans have now been completed with older carers.
