Search Tips

The basics

You can find information on Haringey’s website by using the search box in the top left hand corner of this page.

Just type in what you want to find and click on the ‘go’ button next to it. A page will appear which lists all the pages and documents that match what you typed.

How useful that list is depends on what you typed into the search box, so choose your words carefully.

Choosing your words

The words you type into the search box are called your search terms – they should be simple, but not vague. For example, if you’re looking for information on Bruce Castle type in ‘bruce’ and ‘castle’. If you want information on Bruce Castle Museum type in ‘bruce’, ‘castle’ and ‘museum’.

It’s best to use a maximum of three or four words. Using fewer may return too many results, while using lots of words may rule out the page you’re looking for.

Common words: You don’t need to include common words like ‘and’ and ‘the’. These words are likely to appear on every page, and so won’t help to narrow down your search.

Capital letters: There’s no need to worry about capital letters, whether you use them or not, the same results will be returned.

Spelling: If spelling is not your strong point, don’t worry, as long as the word you typed is nearly spelt right, the correct spelling will be suggested. For example, if you type in ‘bruce castle musuem’ you’ll see the following: Did you mean… bruce castle museum?

The results page

Once you’ve entered your search terms and clicked ‘go’ the results page will appear.

The results page lists all the pages and documents that match your search terms. The name of the page/document is listed, along with a selection of text from it, with the words you searched for highlighted in bold.

A quick glance at the text should indicate whether that page is what you’re looking for.

The closest matching page/document is listed at the top of the results page, with pages/documents further down the list being a less close match.

Have a look at the first few results, if the selected text from the pages/documents looks relevant – click on the page title to take you to the page itself.

Improving your search

If the results returned don’t include anything helpful, try changing your search terms:

If you’ve got lots of results returned your search terms may have been too vague. Try being more specific or adding more words.

If you haven’t got any results returned your search terms may have been too specific. Try removing one or two words from your search terms.
