Dear resident,

We are now into a new municipal year, with a new Mayor for 2008/9, Cllr Alan Dobbie. He’s looking forward to meeting residents across the borough. Find out more about him and his chosen charity.

It’s also the time when we sign off plans for the coming year with central government and our partners, including our Local Area Agreement. It’s an important plan because it sets out how we will work together to tackle our most pressing issues and improve the quality of life for everyone in Haringey.

But we know that what’s most important is what we actually do. On the environment, for example, we are now recycling 25 per cent of our household waste, thanks to you, and we are looking to boost that to 35 per cent or more over the next three years with our expanded service.

We are also getting our streets cleaner, with a new litter picking service meaning our streets are now being cleaned at least twice a week.

Anti-social behaviour by youngsters is another big issue. All parents sometimes need help and support, and I am delighted with the success of our first parenting classes. We also have details of our Summer University holiday activities for young people.

Finally, our quality of life depends on our people, and the efforts all of us put in to improve our community, much of it unpaid. So if you have some time on your hands, find out about opportunities to volunteer.

Leader, Haringey Council
