Muswell Hill Youth Centre reveals new facilities

Young people in Haringey can now make their own music, learn how to cook and edit their own films, thanks to a £165,000 refurbishment of Muswell Hill Youth Centre.

Work on the centre in Hillfield Park has taken two months, but the new look and improved facilities will be unveiled at an official opening on Monday 15 February.

Young people campaigned for the improvements through petitions and by making a video documentary, which resulted in funding through Youth Capital Fund Plus.

Cllr Lorna Reith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:

“These young people managed to attract the funding and were at the heart of deciding how the centre could be improved.

“Not only will the existing centre visitors benefit from much better facilities, the improvements are likely to attract new members as well.”

This is the first major refurbishment of the youth centre since it was opened in 1972. It has been redecorated throughout, a new frontage has been created and there is also a new music studio, computer suite and kitchen area.

New facilities at the centre, which is run by Haringey Council’s Youth Service, will allow young people to access the Internet, edit films, take part in catering courses and make their own music.

The facilities will be available to all youth centre members, and also to the youth club for young people with autism.
