Wood Green school celebrates tolerance and understanding

Friday 5 February 2010

Children in Wood Green will be learning about disabilities and people from different backgrounds next week through fun and engaging activities.

The Inclusion Week is being run by Belmont Infant and Junior School in Rusper Road, and was organised as part of the school’s partnership with The Vale special school.

The infants school will be hosting and running activities between February 8 to 12 will include visits from Haringey Shed, disability awareness workshops, singing and signing sessions and playground games from different cultures. Children will also be working with pupils from neighbouring schools, including Belmont Junior School, The Vale, St Martin’s Primary School and Northumberland Park Community School.

Cllr Lorna Reith, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:

“This week will give children an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about disability, race and other cultures. Through the week they will learn to understand and celebrate diversity and will also have a chance to see that while people may be different, they can often have a great deal in common too.”

During the week there will also be activities for parents and carers, including a coffee morning about disability to help them answer any questions their children may ask.

The week will end with a Red Day, where children will wear red clothes to celebrate Chinese New Year. They will be collecting money during the day, which will be sent to help victims of the Haiti earthquake.
