Tottenham teamwork clears up Lawrence Road tip
Publication date: Friday 29 June 2012
A corner of Tottenham that had become an urban eyesore has been cleaned up thanks to the council and key partners working together to tackle the multiple problems of the area.
For some time Lawrence Road, N17,has been blighted by dumped rubbish, illegally parked, untaxed and abandoned vehicles, fly-tipping and the misuse of factory buildings.
But over the last few months the council has targeted resources and worked with the police, Thames Water and other organisations to support residents and businesses plagued by the area’s problems.
Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver , said:
"This area has been very difficult to clean up because there were so many different problems, requiring different responses. As soon as one issue was dealt with another would occur so we knew we had to take action that could lead to a sustainable solution.
"Through our different teams working together we have managed to transform the area for those who live and work here."
A priority was the need to deal with the late night noise, unlicensed events and waste and litter caused by unauthorised churches occupying disused factory buildings. They were told to clear all their accumulated litter and to put valid waste procedures in place or face prosecution.
Other enforcement activities in the area include:
- cutting rubbish dumping beside a tree at the junction of Lawrence Road and West Green Road by formally cautioning offenders and installing CCTV cameras to monitor and catch further fly-tippers
- clearing litter and overgrown foliage further along Lawrence Road and erecting fencing to prevent a reoccurrence
- stopping large scale fly-tipping on unsecured private land by serving notices on the landowners to clear the site and erect gates to prevent further problems
- clearing a sewage leak along Lawrence Road by finding and blocking (with Thames Water) an illegal private connection to one of the pipes
- removing illegally parked and untaxed vehicles, including large articulated lorries and a caravan - which was removed and crushed after obstructing the highway
- removing uncontrolled dogs and stopping barking throughout the night
- changing and clearing a free car park used to dump untaxed and abandoned vehicles into a pay and display car park
- moving out rough sleepers from a play area in Elizabeth Green and installing CCTV and sensor lights
- cleaning up an unauthorised breakers yard of waste, vehicle parts and all pollutants
