Three in a row for council tax freeze
Publication date: Thursday 2 February 2012
Haringey Council will freeze its council tax for the third consecutive year as it looks to ease the burden on hard-pressed families.
The proposal was announced by the council’s finance chief Cllr Joe Goldberg ahead of Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, when councillors will consider next year’s budget.
Plans will then go before Full Council for final agreement on Tuesday 28 February.
Cllr Goldberg, Cabinet Member for Finance, said:
We wanted to make sure we took into account residents’ contributions to the budget consultation, but I am pleased to say we will be proposing to freeze council tax for Haringey’s residents again this year - for what will be the third year in a row.
We understand how all residents across our borough are feeling a squeeze on their living standards, particularly with a 2.5% rise in VAT and a recent 7% hike in travel fares.
We are keen to avoid adding to the anxiety and burden that is evident across our borough.
Particularly with rising unemployment, especially among the young and even in more affluent areas like Hornsey, Crouch End and Stroud Green, it is important we show that we do not take residents’ contributions for granted.
- Cabinet members will consider budget proposals on Tuesday 7 February before the budget goes before Full Council for final agreement on Tuesday 28 February.
