The Big Tidy Up rolls into Haringey
Friday 10 October 2008
School children, residents and police Safer Neighbourhoods Teams will be joining Haringey Council staff in one of the biggest litter picks to take place in London since the Wombles last wombled around Wimbledon Common.
The 10 day cleaning blitz, which will take place in roads and housing estates across Haringey, is part of the Big Tidy Up – a national environmental campaign run by Keep Britain Tidy.
Besides the litter picking, council staff will also be deep cleaning pavements, planting in open spaces, cleaning up alleyways, holding recycling workshops and knocking on doors to remind people of the bulky waste collections available.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Conservation, Cllr Brian Haley, said:
“The Big Tidy Up is a great initiative which we are very pleased to take part in.
“We’re committed to making Haringey a cleaner borough, and improving the appearance of our streets is a key component of our new Greenest Borough Strategy. Figures show that street cleanliness across Haringey has improved hugely in recent months, but we know there’s still more work to do.
“I am delighted that so many residents and school children have been keen to join us in this clean-up, and hopefully we will succeed in making long-term environmental improvements to streets and areas around the borough.”
