Seven Sisters set for major regeneration

A multi-million pound project which will see Seven Sisters transformed into a modern gateway to south Tottenham has been given the green light.

On Monday night Haringey Council’s planning committee approved proposals by Grainger to redevelop the old Ward’s Corner site - delivering new homes and shops, hundreds of jobs and major investment to the area.

The £65million scheme is also key to the wider regeneration of Tottenham following last summer’s riots.

Highlights of the plans include:

  • A revamped modern local market with priority over pitches given to existing stallholders
  • New shops including high street stores and dedicated space for independent traders
  • 196 new homes ranging from studio apartments to three-bed flats
  • Around 600 jobs created through construction, new retail space and a strengthened local economy
  • Street improvements including tree planting, a wider and less cluttered pavement, new seating and landscaping

Members of the planning committee also asked for extra conditions to guarantee support for existing market traders and ensure top quality materials are used in the construction.

Approval follows more than seven years of planning and consultation by Grainger and the council, including with local residents, traders and the Wards Corner Coalition.

Cllr Alan Strickland, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Social Inclusion, said:

"It is great news that we are finally in a position to move forward with these plans for Seven Sisters.

"Business as usual is not an option for Seven Sisters. We need significant change to bring the area into the 21st century and give it the improvements it deserves.

"It’s our responsibility as a council to act in the best interests of all the people in Tottenham and to deliver their ambitions. This is a development that will breathe new life into Seven Sisters - with a vibrant high street, a better mix of shops and housing, hundreds of new jobs and a real chance of long term success.

"It will also play a leading role in our long-term vision for the wider transformation of Tottenham which will see increased investment and vitality to create a place people feel proud to belong to.

"I’m grateful to all of the residents and traders who took the time to share their views at last night’s planning committee. We are committed to supporting affected traders and I look forward to working with them and with the local community as we move forward."

Existing stallholders at the Seven Sisters covered Latin market will be offered priority over space in the redeveloped market and will be given help and support with relocation during construction work.
