New scheme for a safer journey to school
Thursday 21 August 2008
Primary school pupils will be starting the new term with a safer journey to school following a new engineering scheme by Haringey Council.
The council is now applying the final touches to the road safety scheme around Stroud Green Primary School, Woodstock Road, N4.
The safety improvements, based on a school travel plan drawn up by Stroud Green Primary with support from the council and Transport for London (TfL), include safer crossing points and traffic calming measures.
The scheme is also aimed at encouraging more parents to let their children cycle or walk to school, rather than taking them by car. That will support Haringey's new Greenest Borough Strategy by reducing carbon emissions from vehicles.
The improvements come just weeks after the council won the School Travel Plan - Borough of the Year award at TfL's Smarter Travel Awards. The accolade recognised Haringey's success in becoming one of the first boroughs in London to have school travel plans in place for every school.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Conservation, Cllr Brian Haley, said:
"It is absolutely critical that we do everything we can to ensure our pupils can travel safely to and from school each day.
"We've introduced road safety schemes based on school travel plans around almost 30 schools so far, and that's helping us to cut the number of injuries and deaths on our roads.
"It's also helping us tackle climate change at a local level because more pupils are walking or cycling to school instead of being taken by car.
"I'd like to thank Stroud Green Primary for all the enthusiasm they've shown towards their school travel plan and I hope the scheme helps us to further reduce road accidents in the borough."
The safety improvements consist of:
- Ennis Road, junction with Perth Road: Narrowing the junction by widening the pavement, and improving the pedestrian crossings with a dropped kerb and tactile paving .
- Perth Road: Relocating existing speed humps to provide a level crossing platform for pedestrians. Introducing "school children" road marking on the approach to the crossing.
- Woodstock Road: Improvements to traffic island through dropped kerb and tactile paving. Double yellow lines replacing single yellow lines outside the school's entrance gate.
- Oxford Road, junction with Woodstock Road: Improved safety for pedestrians crossing the road through dropped kerbs, new paving slabs and tactile paving.
- Woodstock Road, near junction with Upper Tollington Road: Improved safety by widening the pavement and providing dropped kerb and tactile paving.
