Help for problem drinking

Tuesday 1 April 2008

Wood Green Shopping City is to host a stall providing information on services to help problem drinkers and their families, as part of Alcohol Awareness Week.

On Thursday 10 April 2008, Haringey Advisory Group on Alcohol (HAGA) will be running a stall in Wood Green Shopping City from 10am to 4pm. HAGA staff with a range of expertise will offer advice to the public on alcohol-related issues, focusing on those regarding health, employment, and children.

Leaflets and promotional posters will provide members of the public with specific information on alcohol services available within Haringey and outside of it, as well as more general advice on sensible drinking.

Haringey Advisory Group on Alcohol (HAGA) offers a number of services to Haringey residents with alcohol misuse problems. The Day Centre based at Seven Sisters is open six days a week offering a drop-in service, group sessions, counselling, workshops, individual key working and some alternative therapies.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, says:

"This is a very good opportunity for anyone with concerns about the misuse of alcohol to get professional advice. They may know of someone who could benefit from help or they may need help themselves. They can take away leaflets or get information on the spot. We hope lots of people take advantage of this and visit the stall."

COSMIC, the Children and Family Service, offers support to children, young people and families affected by a parent or carer's alcohol or drug misuse.

KINESIS, the Employment Training Service, assists referred clients who are successfully overcoming alcohol and drug problems in returning to work or further education.

Project NewStart runs a residential supported housing scheme for people who have had housing problems caused by substance misuse. Haringey's Community Alcohol Team of nurses offer detoxification in partnership with GPs, home detox and work with street drinkers. HAGA also offers advice for those experiencing domestic violence (ie legal, housing and benefits issues) and with long term alcohol and mental health problems.

For more information, please call HAGA on 020 8800 6999.
