Last chance to vote for park transformation cash
Thursday 15 January 2009
Residents have just days left to secure a mega-makeover for a Haringey park by voting in a London-wide poll.
Lordship Recreation Ground, N17, is among 47 parks in the capital competing for 10 grants of up to £400,000 through a competition organised by Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
But its chances are entirely dependent on how many local people cast votes for the park.
The funding on offer would help Haringey Council carry out major regeneration at Lordship Rec. This includes plans for a new city farm and environmental centre, substantial landscaping improvements, and uncovering the River Moselle, which runs through the park.
The council hopes the scheme would lead to a Green Flag award for Lordship Rec, along with a seven-fold increase in visitors – to 355,000 – making it one of the most popular parks outside central London.
You can now help turn these plans into a reality by visiting www.london.gov.uk/parksvote (external link) and voting for Lordship Recreation Ground.
People unable to access the Internet can request a postal vote form by calling 020 7983 4100.
Alternatively, you can text “parks” and your full London post code to 62697. If you are a Haringey resident, this will automatically give a vote to Lordship Rec.
The deadline for voting is Friday 30 January 2009
Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Dhiren Basu, said:
“This is a fantastic one-off opportunity to secure major funding for Lordship Rec.
“We’re lucky enough in Haringey to have great support from Friends’ groups and community organisations for our parks improvement plans. That’s helped us achieve the second highest number of Green Flag-winning open spaces in London.
“Now we need the entire Haringey community to get behind Lordship Recreation Ground and vote for it in the London poll. A grant of hundreds of thousands of pounds would be a huge boost in our efforts to make Lordship Rec one of the best very parks in the capital.”
The 47 shortlisted parks have been divided into five London sub-regions (North West, North, North East, South East and South West), with around ten parks per sub-region to vote on. The winners will be the two parks in each of the five London sub-regions which get the most votes.
