One borough, one future - building a better Haringey
Publication date: Wednesday 8 February 2012
Haringey Council has underlined its commitment to a stronger and more prosperous place for all residents through budget plans designed to directly address the borough’s main economic and social challenges.
Cabinet members last night (Tuesday 7 February) agreed the budget proposals to go before full council on 28 February.
Councillors recommend a council tax freeze for the third consecutive year to ease the burden on local families.
They also put forward a raft of measures geared towards creating greater equality, boosting local employment prospects and improving quality of life for residents across the borough.
Budget proposals include:
- Tackling unemployment through the creation of a minimum £3.5million jobs scheme to deal directly with the youth jobs crisis, with an initial £2million one-off spend by the council
- A one-off £1.2million One Borough One Future Fund for projects which support innovation and change, stimulate new ideas and help the council deliver on its key priority of addressing inequality
- A one-off £200,000 investment in the borough’s parks
- £700,000 to support the regeneration of Tottenham
- A £9million north Tottenham investment package for heritage, public space and environment improvements
Councillor Joe Goldberg, Cabinet Member for Finance and Carbon Reduction, said:
This budget addresses the council’s key priorities – tackling unemployment and investing in jobs; reducing inequality; providing high quality services for residents and making a commitment to the long-term regeneration of Tottenham.
These priorities have been overwhelmingly endorsed in the budget consultation precisely because they are key to improving and strengthening the fabric of our communities.
This is a budget that looks to the future and I very much hope it will provide the platform for voluntary organisations, residents and business to pull together to help all the communities of Haringey to fulfil their potential – from Tottenham to Wood Green, Hornsey and Muswell Hill.
Central government funding cuts will continue to hit our much-loved services, but what is both right and essential is that we put resources into tackling the challenges and seizing opportunities that will help realise our shared ambition for the Better Society here in Haringey.
