Publication date: Wednesday 6 June 2012
They were as quick to go as Usain Bolt. Such was the rush for online tickets to the Alexandra Palace Torch Relay Evening Celebration, that they were sold out within forty minutes.
At Tottenham Green Leisure Centre, where some tickets were distributed, people arrived at dawn to be first in the queue for the 10am start. The last ticket there went at 4pm that day.
Over 4,000 people will be attending the Evening Celebration which takes place on the same day as the Torch Relay, 25 July. Those attending could get to have their photo taken with the Torch and will enjoy an evening of great entertainment that will be aired live by the BBC.
Those who are not attending the Evening Celebration are invited to help line the Torch Relay Route from Tottenham to Alexandra Palace and to join in the festivities which will be relayed to TV screens around the world.
The council is asking people to wear something white while cheering on the Torchbearers and to look out for the "keepsakes" which will be offered to the crowd by the Presenting Partners of the Games, Coca Cola, Samsung and Lloyds TSB.
Cllr Alan Strickland, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Social Inclusion, is asking residents to leave their homes, parks, shopping and workplaces to welcome the Torchbearers between 5pm and 7pm and put Haringey on the Olympic map. He said:
"This really is our time to shine. Join us on the route, bring your flags, get involved in the moment and let's all cheer on our inspirational Torchbearers as they travel through Tottenham to Muswell Hill."
