Northumberland Park week of action
Publication date: Tuesday 15 June 2010
A joint operation by Haringey Council and the police will be held next week to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and make Northumberland Park a cleaner and safer place to live.
They will be working alongside the London Fire Brigade (LFB), Homes for Haringey and a number of other agencies as well as local residents as part of the week of action.
A week of activity has been planned in Northumberland Park from 21 - 25 June. Proactive operations include weapon sweeps, drug search warrants, removing un-taxed vehicles and dumped waste.
Police will be carrying out crime prevention surveys, with the LFB providing fire safety advice and carrying out free home fire safety visits and fitting free smoke alarms if needed.
There will be an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) operation and operation 'stop it' running alongside each other. ANPR technology, as well as the local knowledge of local officers, is used to target offenders and vehicles suspected of being linked to crime. It is also used to raise the alarm when untaxed or uninsured vehicles and those driven by disqualified motorists pass.
Operation 'stop it' is aimed at tackling fly tippers and involves stopping and searching vehicles carrying waste to see if they hold a waste carriers licence and that they are registered with the Environment Agency as authorised waste carriers. If not they can be liable to a fine or prosecution.
There will also be many opportunities for the local community to meet with the various agencies involved to discuss their concerns:
Monday 21 June at the NRC Park Lane from 3pm - with Northumberland Park Safer Neighbourhoods team, Neighbourhood Management, Homes for Haringey and the Anti-Social Behaviour Action team. Advice on Neighbourhood Watch and crime prevention.
Advice and literature on fire safety in the home will also be provided by London Fire Brigade Tuesday 22 June at the Women and Children's Centre, Somerford Grove from 12pm and Park Lane Children's Centre from 3pm.
Thursday 24 June at the NRC Park Lane from 7pm. An opportunity for residents to be updated on police action in your area and to have a say in setting new priorities for Northumberland Park Safer Neighbourhoods team to tackle.
Cllr Bernice Vanier, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Cohesion, said:
"This week of action targeted at Northumberland Park isn't just about catching criminals.
"It's a chance for local people and businesses to take part and help play their part in tackling anti-social behaviour and preventing crime."
Haringey Safer Neighbourhoods Chief Inspector Jon Williams said:
"This week of action is about keeping crime down, targeting offenders, and showing the local community the work we and our partners do all year round to ensure the area they live in is safe. It is also an opportunity for the community to get involved - we want to hear from you so we can work together to make your neighbourhood a cleaner and safer place to live."
