Nominations open for Young Haringey Heroes Awards

Melina Demetriou is presented with her Junior Sport Achievement Award by Olympic medallist Leon Taylor (winner of silver medal for synchronised diving, Athens 2004).The hunt for outstanding young people is now on, with nominations sought for the third annual Young Haringey Heroes Awards.

The awards celebrate the achievements of young people under 21 and show the positive contribution young people are making to the local community.

There are eleven award categories including caring for others, outstanding positive contribution, academic and sporting achievement, environmental awareness, music and performing arts.

The awards ceremony will be held at the Bernie Grant Arts Centre on July 9.

Cllr Lorna Reith, cabinet member for children and young people said:

“These awards are a great way of celebrating the achievements of young people in Haringey.

“Our borough has scores of young people who are making a real contribution to the local community and this is our opportunity to celebrate the good work they are doing.”

Almost 200 children and young people were nominated for awards last year.

Ten-year-old Melina Demetriou won the Junior Sport Achievement Award. She said:

“I was surprised when I was nominated and on the day of the awards, when they announced that I had won, I was thrilled that my hard work had paid off andhad beenrecognised. A very special day and one I will never forget!”

Nominations can be made online through www.haringey.gov.uk/voteyoungheroes and forms are also available in libraries and schools. The deadline is April 30.
