Noise team keeps the peace over Christmas
Publication date: Wednesday 25 January 2012
Christmas cheer was loud and clear in Haringey according to the Enforcement Response noise team who received 188 complaints between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day.
On Christmas Day itself officers responded to 30 complaints. Over the New Year weekend they received a total number of 90 complaints, from noisy intruder alarms to a warehouse rave, with the majority being about loud music.
Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver, said:
"While the rest of us were enjoying a relaxing day our noise team was out keeping the peace! During times of festivities we usually get an increase in noise complaints and I ask everyone to be considerate neighbours, even during special times, and keep music to an acceptable level."
Haringey’s noise response team is one of the busiest in the country operating 18 hours a day. Last year it handled 7,886 complaints of which 90 per cent were responded to within 30 minutes.
Last year 126 noise abatement notices were served and 549 written warnings were issued.
Complaints involved the following types of noise:
- noisy neighbours (including loud music and parties) and barking dogs
- building sites, roadworks and DIY
- prolonged sounding of intruder and car alarms
- ventilation systems and plant noise
- noisy vehicles, equipment or machinery in the street
- night clubs and licensed premises
Where warnings have been ignored, council enforcement officers have powers to seize noise making equipment or start proceedings resulting in fines of up to £5,000 for residential premises and up to £20,000 for commercial premises.
