Nigerian Carnival cancelled

Publication date: Friday 6 August 2010

The Nigerian Carnival planned for Finsbury Park this weekend has been cancelled.

The organiser notified the council that he was unable to proceed with the event as he could not put in place the infrastructure to enable a safe event for the public.

This meant that licensing conditions could not be met.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:

“We have been left with no alternative but to withdraw the licence for this event.

“Public safety is an absolute priority and organisers had failed to meet conditions set out in the licence so that arrangements were in place to ensure people were safe.

“However, this decision does not prevent future applications – should organisers wish to put forward a proposal for next year which includes safety measures.”

The organiser has been asked to ensure that people are told about the cancellation, including putting information on the NCUK website, Nigerian TV channels and other media. He has also been asked to ensure he has staff available at the park to speak to any crowds who may still turn up and help explain that there is no event. Licensing officers from the council will also be present.
