New crossing plans announced
Wednesday 20 August 2008
Haringey Council has announced new plans to introduce a pedestrian crossing in a busy main road as part of its efforts to improve road safety across the borough.
The plans for the signal controlled crossing at the junction of The Roundway with Gospatrick Road, N17, are aimed at making pedestrians safer and so encouraging more people to walk around the area.
In addition to the pedestrian crossing, the council is proposing to make Gospatrick Road one way to the west of the The Roundway, with traffic flowing west.
However, under the plans cyclists would still be able to turn into The Roundway from Gospatrick Road by means of a pavement shared with pedestrians.
Cabinet Member for Environment and Conservation, Cllr Brian Haley, said:
"Traffic tends to be very heavy in this stretch of The Roundway because it's one of the main links to the A10.
"That makes it extremely difficult - and sometimes dangerous - to cross the road, which in turn discourages many people from getting around the area on foot.
"We're trying very hard to strike a good balance between motorists, cyclists and pedestrians in Haringey, so that no area is completely dominated by traffic.
"We believe these proposals would go some way towards helping us achieve our objective by making it safer to walk in The Roundway area, but we would now welcome residents' views."
The council is now sending out leaflets explaining the plans to local residents.
