Neighbour catches flytipper red-handed
Publication date: Tuesday 27 July 2010
A flytipper has been found guilty of dumping rubbish on a Tottenham street after a neighbour's quick action helped police catch him redhanded!
Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
"It is great to know that residents are helping us in the fight against flytippers. It can be very difficult to prove who has been dumping rubbish and eagle-eyed residents can help us keep our streets free from eyesores. Our officers and the police are keen to get rid of the scourge of flytipping and welcome help form the public."
On 1 December a Haringey Street Enforcement Officer witnessed Mr Ian Williams of SE1 flytipping waste from a nearby refurbished property into Moira Close N17. A resident has also spied the offence taking place and called the police.
The police responded swiftly and arrested Mr Williams on the spot and took him to the nearest police station where he was formally interviewed by the street enforcement officer and offered the chance to accept a Fixed Penalty Notice. However, Mr Williams denied any involvement in flytipping so his case was referred to the courts.
On July 14, with eyewitness evidence working against him, Tottenham Magistrates found Williams guilty of flytipping, contrary to the Environmental Protection Act 1990. He will be sentenced on the 4 August 2010 at Highgate Magistrates Court.
