Thursday 1 May 2008

May is national Museums and Galleries Month, and a series of special family events are being staged at Haringey's local history museum Bruce Castle.

Special events in May include:

18 May, 2pm - 4pm: Merry Play, with traditional games, maypole dancing, egg and spoon racing and more

19 May, 12.15pm: Gadget Magic, with gizmo expert Maurice Collins and unusual gadgets from his wide collection

25 May, 2pm - 4pm: Draw Bruce Castle. Family drawing afternoon with architectural artist Steve Amor, and a chance to have your drawing of the museum on show in June's exhibition of pictures of Bruce Castle through the ages.

"Bruce Castle is a fantastic place with something for everyone, and national museums month is the ideal time for residents to become local tourists and take a look at what's on offer,"

said Cllr Dhiren Basu, Haringey cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong learning.

Bruce Castle museum is housed in one of Haringey's oldest buildings, the original Tottenham manor house, later famous as the home of penny post creator Sir Rowland Hill.

Bruce Castle was voted one of the UK's top 20 “hidden tourist gems” last year, and has recently been shortlisted for a national award for its work with the borough's Somali community.

The museum is in Lordship Lane N17, open Wednesday to Sunday 1pm - 5pm. Schools and groups may book at other times. Call 020 8808 8772 for more details or see www.haringey.gov.uk/brucecastlemuseum

The museum is 10 minutes by foot from Bruce Grove overland station, or the 123 and 243 buses from Wood Green or Seven Sisters underground stations stop outside.
