Haringey Local History Fair 2008
Wednesday 23 January 2008
If you've ever wondered about the history of your family or the local area but didn't know where to start, then Haringey Council's Local History Fair 2008 is the event for you.
The annual free event hosted by Haringey Council's local history team at Bruce Castle Museum takes place on Saturday 9 February, 11am to 4pm.
It features local history groups - from the Hornsey Historical Society to the Tottenham Civic Society and the Radical History Network of North-East London - with stalls, speakers, information and guidance covering all you need to know about researching local history.
A short talks programme includes sessions on looking after Tottenham's townscape, mapping the slave trade connection in Haringey, the New River in Haringey, recording the history of Finsbury Park, and the Heritage Lottery-funded project on postal history in Tottenham.
The museum's archives search room will be open from 1pm to 4pm for introductory tours and the chance to ask staff about researching local and family history, and the café will be open for refreshments.
There will also be a guided walk around the Bruce Grove townscape heritage initiative scheme, and the opportunity to use a new online resource mapping London and the slave trade.
"Our archives are a real treasure trove. The local history fair is a great opportunity for anyone interested in the borough's past, the history of their family, street or house, to find out more," said Cllr Dhiren Basu, cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong learning.
Bruce Castle Museum is in Lordship Lane, N17. Call 020 8808 8772 for more details.
The museum is 10 minutes by foot from Bruce Grove overland station, or the 123 and 243 buses from Wood Green or Seven Sisters underground stations stop outside.
