Local Democracy Week - 13 to 19 October

Wednesday 8 October 2008

Haringey Council will be supporting Local Democracy Week 2008 with a series of events to raise young people's awareness of local councils and the democratic process.

Cllr Liz Santry, cabinet member for children and young people, said:

"It is important that young people and children understand and get involved in the democratic process. Local Democracy Week is a great way to encourage active participation."

Events taking place include:

  • A young people's question time with Council Leader Cllr George Meehan and other guests, to take place in Wood Green Civic Centre, which will be webcast;
  • A series of Mayoral receptions with local groups to raise awareness of the work of the Mayor and to increase understanding of the democratic process in Haringey;
  • Mayor Cllr Alan Dobbie will also be hosting school parties, who after a reception and talk, will be invited to use the civic chamber to host one of their school council meetings;
  • Haringey councillors will be undertaking a series of visits to local schools during the week.

Councillors will also be running a stall in Wood Green Library on Friday 17 October from 10am – 12 noon, promoting the London Council's campaign "Be a Councillor".
