Low Carbon Zone party in Muswell Hill
Publication date: Monday 22 February 2010
Everyone is welcome to attend celebrations launching Haringey's Low Carbon Zone (LCZ), on Saturday 27 February at Muswell Hill Primary School, N10.
The council and it's partners, including Muswell Hill Sustainability Group, have been awarded over £600,000 by the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to establish a Low Carbon Zone as a blueprint for sustainable living.
Muswell Hill was the area chosen for this pilot and will be the focus of carbon cutting exercises and behaviour change experiments over coming months, the aim being to test practical measures to reduce carbon emissions in the area.
After several months planning, this launch marks the start of the project which will involve the council the local community, campaigners, retailers and climate change experts. Along with a children's entertainer and fun demonstrations such as the bike power challenge, will be talks and discussions of a more serious nature.
Haringey Council leader, Cllr Claire Kober, said:
"This is a very exciting project and we want residents to get involved. We want the launch to be fun so that whole families can come and enjoy themselves while learning about how we can reduce carbon emissions in Muswell Hill. The council is committed to this project but we need everyone to do what they can to help us become the greenest borough and do our bit to tackle climate change."
The launch event will last from 10.30am to 3pm. Presentations and a question and answer session will take place between 10.30am and 11.30am, with stalls and entertainment taking place between 12pm and 3pm.
This fun family event will give residents the chance to find out about the aims of the LCZ initiative and how they can participate. It will also provide an opportunity for recycling goods as a Give or Take stall will operate, organised by Forest Recycling: bring along something you no longer want and take home something someone else has finished with!
Residents can also comment on which local community buildings they would like to see greened, which energy saving measures they are most interested in installing in their home and how we can best effect behaviour change to help cut carbon emissions.
Alongside the Give and Take tent there will be stalls on sustainable living, demonstrations of renewable technology and energy saving measures, pedal bike power displays - so bring your bike, information on the Streetcar car club scheme and sustainable food stalls. Bring along your own broken bike and Go By Bike will fix it for free too!
The Low Carbon Zone is aimed at both those living in the Zone and everyone who is interested in finding out about how they can join in and benefit from energy saving measures.
