Landlord fined for licence breaches

Publication date: Friday 25 November 2011

A landlord has been fined £1,500 and ordered to pay costs of £476 for serious breaches of his licence in his multiple occupied property (HMO).

On 16 November Mr Anthony Tejuoso of Harley Street, W1 was convicted at Highgate Magistrates Court of breaching his licence conditions by not supplying annual inspection certificates for gas appliances, fire detection equipment and emergency lighting systems for an HMO in Dukes Avenue, Muswell Hill, N10.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

It is essential that the landlords of licensed HMOs abide by the conditions of their licence. The inspection certificates are required as proof that landlords are taking their responsibilities seriously and getting appliances and equipment checked.  Where landlords breach their licence conditions we will take action.

Tejuoso's HMO licence was first granted in July 2007 for 5 years. Since then Mr Tejuoso has been slow to respond to requests for the annual certificates and this year, despite numerous requests, he failed to submit them at all.

The case went to court last week. Tejuoso failed to turn up and the case was heard in his absence.
