Keeping winter at bay

Publication date: Thursday 2 February 2012

Keeping winter at bay was top of the agenda for Haringey's gritting crews who braved the cold to grit the borough's roads last night.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

We are keeping an eye on the forecasts and we will do all we can to keep the roads open and traffic flowing, whatever the weather. Where frost or ice is forecast we have teams surveying roads and treating where necessary to prevent accidents and traffic congestion.

With snow possibly forecast at the weekend we are prepared and we ask residents to treat their own paths where necessary and please be mindful of neighbours who may need help.

The council's waste contractor, Veolia, are undertaking frost patrols at night and are ready with gritting machines whenever a widespread frost or snow is expected. Last night, with severe frost expected in parts, the crews spread salt on much of the borough’s road network. They will be on standby over the weekend to deal with any snow falls.

If necessary, gritting lorries will work round the clock to ensure priority roads and bus routes are clear for emergency services and commuter traffic.
