Keeping Haringey moving during severe weather

Publication date: Monday 6 February 2012

Haringey's gritting teams did an excellent job at the weekend and will continue to keep an eye on the weather and treat roads accordingly, says the Cabinet Member for the Environment, Cllr Nilgun Canver.

The gritting teams ensured that all major routes were treated and that traffic and public transport carried on mostly without incident during a weekend of heavy snow.

During severe weather, in accordance with the Winter Service Plan, the council will continue to prioritise certain routes and pavements for gritting to keep Haringey moving, get people to and from work and ensure access for emergency vehicles and care for the vulnerable.

Cllr Canver adds:

With freezing temperatures forecast we will be vigilant and are taking action as we speak. Our stocks of grit are at full capacity and we have placed grit bins around the borough. We have increased the number of Priority 1 routes that get a pre-treatment in anticipation of snow and ice and have pledged, where possible, to keep school routes clear to ensure schools are open and parents are free to get to work.

Clearly we must prioritise routes for treatment as it is not possible to grit every road and pavement. The council will do its utmost to rise to any challenge the weather might bring and I hope that residents will look out for any vulnerable neighbours.

The council will follow the Winter Plan and will treat the roads accordingly.

Gritting to treat snow takes two forms:

  • pre-treatment to help prevent snow settling
  • post-treatment to guard against settled snow or compacted ice

Pavement gritting also follows a priority list with Priority 1 routes being the highest as they are the most heavily trafficked areas serving key locations, emergency services, shopping centres and residential homes.
