Housing Services on the up

Publication date: Thursday 5 July 2012

Improvements across the range of Haringey’s housing services were recognised last week as several services were shortlisted for awards at the prestigious Chartered Institute of Housing ‘UK Housing awards’ ceremony.

The borough’s Arms Length Management Organisation (ALMO), Homes for Haringey, won in the 'ALMO of the Year' category, fighting off tough competition from ALMOs across the country. The judges were particularly impressed with the organisation's focus on staff engagement and their work to support communities following the riots in Tottenham.

The council’s Community Housing Services were also recognised on the night. Their innovative new Home Connections App, which allows residents to bid for council properties through their mobile phones, was shortlisted in the 'Innovation of the Year' category. Similarly, Homes for Haringey’s new 'Quick Fix' complaints scheme got down to the final six, but narrowly missed out on the final award.

The council has also been shortlisted for an Andy Ludlow Award. Hearthstone, the council-led partnership offering advice and support around domestic violence, is one of six finalists. These annual awards are held to recognise innovative work and projects that tackle homelessness in London and beyond. They were established in memory of Andy Ludlow, who was Director of Housing and Social Services in Haringey and was a pioneer in developing a 'holistic' approach to housing and social services in this borough.

Cllr John Bevan, Cabinet Member for Housing, said:

"We’ve worked incredibly hard over the last few years to improve our housing offer to residents across the borough and our involvement in these awards is fantastic recognition for this work. Housing services are delivered by both the council and the ALMO and since 2006 we have developed a strong partnership, focussing on improving residents' homes and lives."

Jonathan Card, Chair of the Homes for Haringey Board, said:

"The ALMO of the Year award is a reflection of the great progress that we’ve made in the last six years and the major improvements we’ve seen in service delivery and residents’ homes. This is a great credit to the company and the strong partnership we’ve developed with Haringey Council. I would like to take the opportunity to thank residents, staff, and our partners for their ongoing support."
