Highgate Wood staff and students celebrate new facilities
Publication date: Friday 5 March 2010
Students and staff at Highgate Wood School celebrated the completion of £4.9m worth of exciting new facilities this week.
The school in Crouch End is the first to be finished in Haringey’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. Students and teachers celebrated yesterday (4 March) by officially opening the school’s new Learning Resource Centre.
The new centre has a large library collection, a quiet reading area, a computer suite, a media resource centre and a music technology room. The library and computer area – which has Internet access for study and research – will be open to the community outside of school hours.
It was officially opened by the writer and performer John Amobi to coincide with World Book Day. John Amobi is a local resident and he entertained guests with stories of his life and a performance in the refurbished performance hall.
Cllr Lorna Reith, cabinet member for children and young people, was delighted with the new centre and said:
“The opening of the centre and the completion of our first BSF project in Haringey shows our clear commitment to transforming the lives of young people in the borough. The students at Highgate Wood will have these fantastic facilities to use for years to come.”
The event was attended by members of the student design team - who had input in the design of their school, school staff, councillors and the contractors who built the new facilities.
The new centre completes a range of works at the school totalling £4.9m including the creation of a new dining space for pupils, improved maths and English spaces and a performing arts area.
Headteacher Patrick Cozier said:
“We are delighted with our new facilities and we are excited to be able to begin to enjoy the opportunities that the new areas will bring. The changes that we have been able to make will benefit Highgate Wood students both in the present and in the future”.
Highgate Wood school is the first of 12 projects to complete with more than £214m being used to transform teaching and learning across the borough.
