A Haringey centre that has helped thousands of domestic violence victims is up for a major award.

Hearthstone, Haringey Council’s Domestic Violence and Support Centre, has been shortlisted for the prestigious Andy Ludlow Homelessness Awards 2012 and a share of £65,000 for investment in the project.

Hearthstone provides a multi-agency response to domestic violence and preventing survivors of abuse becoming homeless with all support services, such as accommodation, benefits and counselling, under one roof.

The trailblazing centre in Commerce Road, Wood Green, benefited from a major extension and refurbishment in 2009 and has been shortlisted for its innovative approach to tackling homelessness.

Cllr Richard Watson, Cabinet Member for Communities, said:

"This is welcome recognition both for the important services provided by Hearthstone and the dedication of the staff who work there.

"Domestic violence is a devastating crime and Hearthstone provides a much needed safe and supportive environment for victims, helping them get their lives back on track quickly."

The Andy Ludlow Homelessness Awards (external link) were set up in 1999 as a lasting legacy and testament to the work of the director of housing and social services at Haringey Council who died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage, aged 51.

The awards are sponsored by the London Housing Foundation, Shelter and the 33 London boroughs and run by London Councils.
