Haringey's website in top twenty

Wednesday 25 March 2009

You are looking at one of the top twenty local authority websites in the country, according to an authoritative survey of 468 council sites.

The council website makes the grade in the latest survey by the Society of Information Technology Management (SOCITM), which has been checking the performance and content of local authority websites across the country over the past decade.

The Haringey website has been classified as "transactional" for the second year running, meaning that users can do business with the council through the site across the whole range of services, from paying council bills to applying for planning permission or reserving a library book.

For the first time the website was also judged as "excellent" on useful content, with assessors concluding:

"It was a pleasure to review this website. I really liked how all the online transactions are so well branded. It shows that it really can be done."

Cllr Matt Cooke, cabinet member for community cohesion and involvement, said:

"We have put a lot of work into improving our website so that it is easier to use and increasingly helps us provide better services - so it's fantastic to know we're heading in the right direction - but we cannot be complacent.

"The improvements we have in mind include ways to make the site more interactive. We're also exploring the most up-to-date ideas about what the website could and should be doing not just today, but in several years time. As more and more people use the web in everyday life and in contacting the council, it's only right that we're up to date with them, living up to their expectations."

The pages on teaching in Haringey were described as "an example of best practice," and the virtual tours of Haringey parks also got a special mention with one assessor saying:

"The parks' 360 degree panoramic virtual tours are very impressive, both in their features and the sheer number of them. This was an altogether clever little feature that would certainly enable you to familiarise yourself with the park's layout, attractions and facilities. I felt like I had been to visit!"
