The new system comprises:

  • a text messaging alert system, and
  • a handy "z-card" guide setting out what people should do in emergencies such as power cuts, flooding and severe weather.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Safer Communities, said:

"Fortunately, emergencies don't happen every day, but they could affect us all.

"This new system is a quick and easy way for us to let people know if there's an incident and what they should do.

"We have well-prepared plans to deal with emergencies so that we can ensure residents are as safe as possible and disruption is kept to a minimum."

The new system has been commended by the London Resilience Gold Group as an example of good practice and innovation and has suggested that other boroughs use similar schemes.

Haringey Emergency Alert Service:

This messaging service will allow residents, business owners and community leaders to sign up and receive notification of any imminent or current emergencies within their ward, or within the borough if it is a wide spread emergency.

The message can be received by text message, or via an email address or fax number. It is anticipated that this mass messaging service will only be used in the event of significant emergencies where serious disruption is occurring or expected.

Emergency Awareness Guides:

The awareness guides are credit card sized folding z-cards which will offer advice on how to prepare for an emergency and what to do in an emergency, as well as providing space to put personal information and contacts. These cards will also be available in larger print.

As well as a general preparedness guide, a guide for pet owners has also been developed to allow pet owners to plan for the welfare of their pets, for example planning where your pet could stay if you had to leave your home.
