Haringey children help design their perfect playground
Friday 5 September 2008
Children at a Hornsey primary school will see their designs for the perfect playground become a reality thanks to a new improvement project by Haringey Council.
Work on a major redevelopment of the play area at Priory Park, N8, with new swings, new play units and an improved lay-out, starts on Monday 8 September. The playground will be closed temporarily while work is carried out.
The designs are the brainchild of children at the local St Mary's Primary School, who carried out a special site visit to the playground before explaining to Haringey Council the improvements they would like to see.
These include zoning the playground for different age groups and introducing new rubber surfacing to act as a better cushion around some of the play equipment.
The council also consulted other children who use the playground before finalising the improvement plans.
Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Dhiren Basu, said:
"The best way to improve a playground is to ask the advice of the children who use it.
"The pupils at St Mary's Primary and other children in the area came up with excellent ideas, and I look forward to seeing these turned into physical improvements over the next few weeks.
"Priory Park is among our nine award-winning Green Flag parks and is one of our most popular open spaces. I hope the new playground will further enhance its appeal and encourage even more people to visit it on a regular basis."
The redevelopment work, jointly funded by Haringey Council and the Big Lottery Fund, will begin on 8 September and will require the temporary closure of the playground for several weeks.
The work will also include improvements to drainage at the playground.
