Consultation on new leadership arrangements - closes Monday 13 July

Haringey Council is seeking views on possible new Leader and Cabinet governance arrangements.

Under the new Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 local authorities are required to review their governance arrangements before their next local election, for Haringey May 2010.

Public elections will continue to be held every four years.

Under the Act the Council has two options:

  • A leader and cabinet
The Leader would be supported by a Cabinet chosen by the Leader. This is similar to the current system that has been operating since 2002. The main difference from the current system is that the Leader would be elected by councillors for a term of four years.
  • A directly elected mayor
With this option there would be a separate election process to elect a mayor. As with the leader option, the mayor would be elected for a term of four years and would choose his or her Cabinet.

Consultation on the options is running until Monday 13 July.
