Gathering ideas at the going green conference
Publication date: Monday 8 March 2010
What measures can we all take to help Haringey meet its pledge to cut CO2 emissions in the borough by 40% by 2020?
That was the question posed at the Going Green Conference that took place last month to help garner support and ideas for Haringey's quest to become the greenest borough.
Around 100 local residents, community groups and campaigners came along to the Haringey Sixth Form Centre to assess the council's environmental achievements and projects so far, and discuss ideas for the future.
Hairngey Council leader, Claire Kober, said:
"It's great to see so many people committed to cutting carbon emissions in our borough. Climate change is a global issue but I believe if we take care of the environment in our own locality we can effect real change. This conference was about how we can do that and what measures we can employ within the council and elsewhere that will make the greatest changes."
Conference goers took part in interactive workshops using push button technology and discussed a wide range of environmental subjects from the Muswell Hill Low Carbon Zone, to sustainable transport and sustainable food.
Attendees also had that chance to enter a Dragons Den putting forward their cases for particular environmental improvements. Among the panel were Cabinet Member for Housing, Environment and Conservation, Cllr John Bevan, and members of the council's environmental resources team.
All of the information and ideas from the conference will be collated and an outcomes report will be posted on our Going Green pages later this month.
