Get your Freedom Pass renewed by 31 March

Publication date: Thursday 4 February 2010

Haringey's older and disabled Freedom Pass holders are being urged to ensure they renew their pass by 31 March 2010 so they can continue to enjoy free travel across the capital.

The Freedom Pass, paid for by local councils and the government, is the most comprehensive concessionary fares scheme in the country. It allows Londoners aged 60 and over, plus eligible disabled residents, to free travel on the capital's buses, trains, London Underground, trams, and the Docklands Light Railway as well as local buses across the country.

People can renew their Freedom Pass at the Post Office. For additional security, the new passes will be a smart card which will include a photograph of the owner on the card itself rather than on a separate photocard as is currently the case.

As a result, the new cards will take up to 10 working days to be provided rather than being available immediately over the counter, so Freedom Pass holders are being urged to ensure they apply for their new pass well before 31 March.

Haringey Council Leader, Cllr Claire Kober, said:

"From speaking to Haringey's older residents, I know just how valuable the Freedom Pass is - offering them the opportunity to get out and about without having to worry about the cost.

"The council invests £2million each year to help make the Freedom Pass possible for around 29,000 residents and we will continue to support the scheme.

"The Freedom Pass is a wonderful example of boroughs working together to improve the lives of older and disabled members of our community.

"I would urge all Freedom Pass holders to ensure they renew their passes well before 31 March to ensure they continue to enjoy the benefits of the scheme."
