Fined for backyard rubbish

Wednesday 8 October 2008

A householder who filled his back garden with rubbish and left it for months was fined over £300 last week and forced to pay Haringey Council £200 costs.

The house in Boreham Road, Wood Green N22 was first visited by a council enforcement officer in April 2008 following a complaint about an accumulation of rubbish in the rear garden.

After investigation the council served a statutory notice under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 Section 215 on the owner of the property to remove the rubbish within 28 days. The owner failed to do so.

By the 24th of June the rubbish had still not been moved and a further letter warning of prosecution was sent to the owner.

On the 15th of September magistrates fined the defendant £315, plus £200 costs.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said:

"This rubbish was there for a long time and it is not fair on the neighbours to have to put up with it. Ample warning was given to enable the landlord to clear up the backyard but they chose to ignore this."
