DVD to help Alzheimer carers
Tuesday 9 February 2010
A new DVD to help carers who look after people suffering from Alzheimer's is now available at Haringey libraries.
The DVD is free to rent and 16 copies of the DVD have been presented to Haringey Council's Libraries Service by Viviana Fain-Binda who made the film.
Mrs Fain-Binda, who comes from Camden, looked after her mother who suffered from the condition. She was given £12,000 by a charity to make a film aimed at giving practical help and advice to other carers.
The money was used on crew, equipment and post-production, with Viviana and the film editor working on the film for free.
It has just been made available in DVD format.
Viviana said:
"I came upon this idea because, when I was a carer, I could not find a film giving me the information to help me.
"One of the most difficult things for a carer to do is to ask for help. Many carers feel guilty and think that whatever they do, it's not enough.
"The one thing I would say to other carers is to accept any help that's offered, including going to support groups involving other carers."
Cllr Dhiren Basu, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Lifelong Learning, said:
"This is a really valuable resource for local people.
"I'm sure many carers feel isolated, but this DVD shows how they can help themselves. I'm very grateful to Mrs Fain-Binda for donating these films."
