Trading Standards get cooker hood recalled

Tuesday 22 April 2008

A faulty cooker hood from Homebase has been withdrawn following intervention from Haringey's Trading Standards officers concerned about users getting electric shocks.

Trading Standards received a complaint about a faulty cooker hood bought from Homebase in Harringay. The complainant said he got a shock when he pressed the switch controlling the speed, and that he had the same problem with a replacement one he was given.

Concerned about the safety element, Trading Standards arranged for an electrical test to be carried out which eliminated the possibility that the problem was with the house wiring.

Trading Standards officers then approached Homebase and Hoover, the manufacturer. Homebase said they had withdrawn the model after the consumer complained, and Hoover had begun their own enquiries; they discovered that some hoods in one particular batch had the same fault. As a result they were going to contact all customers who had bought this model of cooker hood (which was only sold through Homebase) and replace any hoods from that batch.

Cllr Nilgun Canver, cabinet member for enforcement and safer communities, said:

"This shows how Trading Standards can work effectively with reputable businesses to deal with product safety problems, and that even with companies who do carry out checks on their products, it is still possible for such problems to occur. I'm pleased to see the system worked well in this case and that all parties co-operated swiftly."
