Come and see your new look park!
Wednesday 20 August 2008
Residents are being invited to come along to a special fun day to showcase the ongoing transformation of a Seven Sisters park.
The free Community Fun Day at Markfield Park, N15, will take place from 12noon to 4pm on Sunday 7 September and will feature a range of entertainment, including face painting and a bouncy castle.
The fun day, organised by Haringey Council along with the Friends of Markfield Park and conservation charity BTCV, will also give people the chance to see the improvements already made at the park and learn more about future regeneration plans.
In addition, visitors can visit the Markfield Beam Engine Museum - home to a prized Victorian pump engine - and find out more about the Markfield Park Bowls Club.
The park can be accessed from Markfield Road, Crowland Road and Gladesmore Road, as well as from the footpath along the River Lee.
Recent improvement work at Markfield includes the creation of a new playground, drainage works, and the construction of a new café, expected to open soon.
An accompanying three-year clean up campaign by the council and Thames Water has also restored clean water to the Old Moselle Brook, which runs through the park.
The upcoming improvement programme, made possible through £1.48million Lottery funding, £328,000 from the Football Foundation, £1million government funding and £425,000 from the council itself, includes:
- A new amphitheatre for performances
- Refurbishment of the pavilion and the Markfield Museum
- A state-of-the-art children's play area
- A new picnic area
- Improved sports pitches with better drainage
- Improved community gardens
- New trees
The improvements will play an important role in the wider regeneration of Seven Sisters and Tottenham Hale, and the council hopes they will lead to Markfield Park winning Green Flag status by 2010.
Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Dhiren Basu, said:
"We want Markfield Park to become one of the best and most popular open spaces in the borough.
"With the support of the Friends' Group and BTCV, we've made major progress in regenerating Markfield over the past 12 months or so.
"The Community Day is a great opportunity for local people to see the improvements that have been made so far, and also learn more about our future plans for transforming the park."
Ian Spurr from the Friends of Markfield Park added:
"We're really excited about the Fun Day on 7 September. The park is really changing for the better and we're encouraging everyone to come down to have a great afternoon out, meet other park users and see the improvements for themselves."
