Fun for all the family at parks celebration

Thursday 9 October 2008

Residents from across the borough are invited to come along to Haringey's most recent award-winning park for a celebration fun day on Saturday 18 October.

The event at Chestnuts Park, St Ann’s Road, N15, will run from 12 noon to 4pm and will feature a range of music, entertainment, children’s activities and much more.

It is being held to mark Haringey Council’s success in achieving Green Flag status for Chestnuts Park earlier this year - making it officially one of the best parks in the country - and a total of nine Green Flags across the borough. That is the second best figure for any London council.

Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Dhiren Basu, said:

“We are very proud of our parks and we want to show them off to as many people as possible.

“With the support of Friends’ groups and community organisations, we’ve managed to create some of the very best open spaces in the country.

“I hope people from across Haringey will come over to Chestnuts on 18 October to join in the fun day and take a look at how the park has been transformed.”

Chestnuts Park was awarded Green Flag status from the Civic Trust following a £560,000 restoration programme funded by the council, The Bridge New Deal for Communities and the Lottery.

The improvement programme, agreed in consultation with the Friends of Chestnuts and local residents, has also seen the creation of a new playground and multi-use games area for football, basketball and other sports, as well as a new café terrace and wildflower meadow.

The other Haringey-managed Green Flag parks are:

  • Albert Road Recreation Ground, N22 (third year winner)
  • Bruce Castle Park, N17 (sixth year winner)
  • Chapmans Green, N22 (third year winner)
  • Downhills Park, N15 (third year winner)
  • Finsbury Park, N4 (second year winner)
  • Priory Park, N8 (sixth year winner)
  • Railway Field Local Nature Reserve, N4 (fifth year winner)
  • Stationers Park, N8 (fifth year winner)

Through its Greenest Borough Strategy, agreed earlier this year, the council has set itself a target of achieving 12 Green Flag parks by 2010.
