Haringey shortlisted for prestigious award for bringing technology into the classroom.

Haringey Council's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme has been shortlisted for a prestigious award for introducing new, cutting edge computing facilities into the borough's classrooms.

The authority's BSF programme is among three councils shortlisted for their 'Innovation in ICT' by Partnership for Schools (PFS) the public body that supports the BSF programme. The shortlisting panel for the awards included representatives from the design community, construction industry, education experts, students and BSF partners.

The award submission sets out how schools were involved and supported in order to prepare them for the start of new ICT systems being introduced into the borough's schools. They include an annually refreshed 'technology library' that gives pupils access to a whole range of educational software and energy efficient 'Ecoquiet PCs'.

The managed ICT service supports all secondary and special schools in the borough with the aim of using new technology to enhance teaching and learning in Haringey's schools.

Through dialogue with schools the Council was able to establish a clear vision of what each school wanted to achieve. This strong partnership with schools ensured that their differing needs - for example with ICT equipment and staff training - would be met through the new service.

In September Haringey began its managed service with RM Education PLC to provide ICT support to all of the borough's secondary and special schools. The contract is worth £24.5 million and covers more than 12,000 students.

Background Information

BSF is the largest single schools capital investment programme for over 50 years. In Haringey the council's £200m programme is leading to significant improvements to secondary and special school buildings and ICT. These changes will help to transform teaching and learning, and build on the rising educational standards in local schools.
