Bruce Castle wins national award

Bruce Castle Museum has won a national award for its educational work.
The museum has won a Sandford Heritage Award for Education from the prestigious Heritage Education Trust.
The museum was praised as "an excellent resource for schools and families to engage with their local heritage."
The citation added:
"A wide-ranging schools programme is complemented by frequently changing exhibitions and a lively schedule of family activities.
"Extensive consultation with both users and advisers ensures this small but dedicated team achieves a programme relevant to local needs and well supported by local schools, families, volunteers and adult learners."
The museum, housed in a Grade 1 listed building, offers a unique local history collection, an extensive archive/local studies service, and regular exhibitions.
There is also a full education programme including:
- Sessions for schools and those with special educational needs;
- family and adult learning workshops;
- talks, tours and local history walks.
There is also support for an active group of volunteers and local history enthusiasts and it hosts events such as Black History Month, Holocaust Memorial Day and local history fairs.
For 2009-2010 the museum had 46,567 visitors and 4,667 school visits.
Cllr Dilek Dogus, Cabinet Member for Adult and Community Services, said:
"Bruce Castle is the showcase for the history of Haringey and we're delighted with this award."
