feature: Waste watchers

14 September 2007

Message to fly tippers: It's easier to get Haringey Council to pick up bulky items than to dump them around the borough, and you won’t ever face a potentially huge fine.

We take a look at the many ways you can get rid of your waste and unwanted goods.

If buying things is easy, getting rid of them is often harder.

Many people don’t know where to turn when they’ve got large items - like electrical equipment or furniture - they no longer want or need.

Some residents try to wrap these items in bin bags and disguise them as domestic waste.

Others pile them into the back of a vehicle and dump them around Haringey, running the risk of being fined and spoiling the environment for all who live and work in the borough.

Both approaches are totally unnecessary. Haringey Council offers a wide range of services to help you not only get rid of your waste, but also ensure it is recycled and reused.

Cabinet member for environment and conservation Cllr Brian Haley said:

"The message is simple. There’s really no need to ever dump anything. Whatever waste or unwanted items you’ve got, we can help you get rid of them. We can also make sure these items are recycled and reused wherever possible.

"I hope residents will take a look at the services listed and make use of them."

Reuse and Recycle Centres

Many items, large and small, can be reused, recycled or disposed of at the borough’s two Reuse and Recycle Centres. The centres take everything from fridge freezers to scrap metal, from batteries to spectacles, and from shoes to mobile phones.

You can visit the centres, located at 35 Hornsey High Street (opposite Greig City Academy) and Park View Road, Tottenham, from 8.30am to 4pm from Monday to Friday and 9am to 4pm at weekends.

Free ‘white goods’ collections

Haringey offers free collection from front gardens for white goods, such as fridges, washing machines, dishwashers, tumble driers, ovens and cookers, and also for televisions, IT equipment, gas bottles and car batteries.

To arrange a collection call Haringey Accord on 020 8885 7700.

Bulky waste collection

Other bulky items, such as furniture or household goods, can be collected from your home for a charge of £16.84 for up to six items.

If you have furniture in good condition that could be used again, you can take advantage of a service run in partnership with charity ReStore Community Projects. This reuse scheme helps give unwanted items a new home instead of going to waste.

To arrange a collection call Haringey Accord on 020 8885 7700 or visit www.haringey.gov.uk/bulkyitems.

Community clear-ups

The council also offers free collection of bulky items from every road in the borough through its annual community clear-up programme. Up to 15 items can be collected free of charge at any one time.

The latest round of collections started on 3 September and will continue until March 2008. A leaflet will be dropped through your door to inform you when the service is coming to your street, or visit www.haringey.gov.uk/communityclearup.
