feature: Celebrating our unsung women

14 May 2008

More than 700 local women came together to celebrate International Women's Day at the College of North East London in Tottenham.

Speakers at the event, organised by Haringey Council and Haringey Women’s Forum, included international racing driver Sarah Franklin and “people’s peer” Baroness Haleh Afshar.

The annual Haringey Unsung Women’s Awards saw presentations to 28 local women, recognising unpaid work in the community.

Haringey deputy mayor Cllr Dilek Dogus said:

“It was humbling to see the commitment so many women make to ensure the smooth running of our communities.

“Their dedication to neighbours and neighbourhoods and the variety of activities they organise on a voluntary basis is amazing. They are all worthy winners.”

The day included performances from singers Stephanie Jones and Marcia Mayers, a fashion show, salsa dancing and workshops on carpentry, painting and decorating, football skills, makeovers, DIY, crafts and quilting.

Haringey Women’s Forum provides a range of services for women and women’s organisations in the borough, including advice and counselling and help with volunteering. For more information call 020 8885 4705 or visit www.hwfonline.org.uk (external link).
