feature: Tottenham transformation
28 May 2008
Work is underway on a new £2 million project to transform the appearance of Tottenham High Road.
A new improvement scheme has been launched around Tottenham that aims to make broken paving stones, rusty streetlights and cluttered streets just a distant memory.
Haringey Council is giving a mile-long stretch of the High Road a thorough makeover in the £2 million environmental project.
The Transport for London-funded scheme, which began in January and will run until March next year, aims to make Tottenham a more attractive and safer place to live and work.
It includes new pavements, better street lighting, new traffic calming measures, removal of street clutter, and junction improvements.
The first phase of the scheme has seen the council carry out improvements between the borough boundary with Enfield and the High Road’s junction with White Hart Lane.
Now the council will continue to carry out the revamp down the High Road, ending with the stretch between Pembury Road and Bruce Grove from October to March next year.
The improvement work is in line with a consultation carried out by the council last summer, in which residents were asked to choose their top five environmental priorities.
More than two thirds selected improved street lighting and pavement resurfacing among their top five choices. Other popular selections were CCTV (61 per cent), improved bus stop waiting areas (47 per cent) and removing unnecessary street furniture, such as signs, posts, bollards and railings.
Cabinet member for environment and conservation Cllr Brian Haley said:
“We’ve listened to what residents told us, and we’re making a wide range of improvements to address their concerns.
“This is a really excellent one-off opportunity for us to improve the environment in Tottenham and make it a much more attractive place to live and work.
“The scheme will complement the range of regeneration schemes we’ve introduced in the area, and I’m confident that residents, businesses and visitors to the area will notice a significant difference over the coming months.”
