feature: Your council: Three stars and improving well
17 March 2008
Haringey Council gets a regular 'health check' from government inspectors. We look at the latest verdict.
A national report has endorsed the way Haringey Council is run and the quality of the services it provides.
The latest Comprehensive Performance Assessment report from independent local government watchdog the Audit Commission, published last month, confirms that Haringey is a good three star council improving well.
The assessment covers financial management and value for money, how the council is managed overall, performance in delivering main services and improvement over the past year since the last check.
Council leader George Meehan said:
“We welcome this report which confirms that we are delivering good services. Most importantly, it also says that we are continuing to improve.
“Along with our citizens’ verdict in the latest residents’ survey, the report shows that local people can have confidence in their council.
“Of course there are areas where we need to do better, and we will be working on those in the coming year as well as moving forward across the board with the aim of achieving excellent status.”
The report highlights improved GCSE results and other services for children and young people, recycling, tackling worklessness through the Haringey Guarantee scheme, neighbourhood management and community safety.
What the Audit Commission says
“Haringey is improving well… and has made good progress in priority areas.
“Haringey works well with its partners and has achieved clear benefits for the community.
“Haringey continues to make good use of its resources and to focus on value for money. Clear improvement plans are in place.”
The assessment scores council performance on a scale of nought to four stars. It looks at corporate and financial management, benefits, children and young people, culture (libraries and leisure facilities), environmental services, housing and adult social care.
Haringey achieved three out of four stars in all categories except adult social care, which scored two stars. The full report and other Haringey inspection reports can be seen on the Audit Commission website (see the external links section below).
