feature: The Green Fair returns
13 May 2008
Last summer more than 1,500 residents attended Haringey Council’s first ever Green Fair – despite the rain.
This year’s fair promises to be even bigger and better, so why not come along and see how you can help the environment?
Whether you’re passionate about recycling, interested in reducing your carbon footprint or simply after a fun day out, Haringey’s second Green Fair promises to tick all the boxes.
The fair, which will be staged on open space outside Tottenham Town Hall from noon to 5pm on Saturday 7 June, will feature a wide range of stalls, entertainment, games, demonstrations, live music, food and drink.
But its main emphasis will again be on green issues, with practical tips and advice on how you can better care for the environment.
You’ll have the chance to test a range of cycles, receive free bike repairs, learn more about recycling, sample organic food and drink, and much else besides.
The public day will follow the Better Haringey Awards on Thursday 5 June, at which the council will give public recognition to those individuals and groups who’ve done most to care for Haringey’s environment over the past 12 months.
There will also be a special school’s day in Tottenham on Friday 6 June, at which hundreds of pupils will be encouraged to think about ways they can help protect the environment.
Cabinet member for environment and conservation Cllr Brian Haley said
“Last year’s Green Fair was a huge success given the weather conditions. The fact so many people showed up despite the rain indicates a real groundswell of environmental interest in Haringey.
“Climate change has become the defining issue of our generation and we’re determined to do what we can to tackle it. We’ve set out an ambition to become one of the greenest boroughs in London, but we’re going to need strong support from the community if we’re going to achieve that.
“So I’d really encourage anyone with even the remotest interest in the environment to come along to the second Green Fair to have fun and see what difference you can make.”
